There are a number of different kinds of fungi which are responsible for causing foot fungus. But, the most common type is the one that causes athlete’s foot. Basically, athlete’s foot and toenail fungus are the two main types of foot fungus which a person can develop. Fungi thrive best in moist and warm places and they can also spread from one individual to another.
You can get a fungal infection from sharing personal items with people who already have an infection or from walking barefoot in places such as pools and public showers. For those who have athlete’s foot, it may not take long for the infection to spread to the toenails. There are a number of remedies for foot fungus and some of the simple ones that can be tried at home include the following:
Tea Tree Oil
Fungal infection is one of the common causes of foot pain. If you are looking to find relief from this pain and discomfort, tea tree oil can be one of the better remedies. It is recommended to use 100% tea tree oil. If you have toenail fungus, you can apply tea tree oil to the nails.
Tea tree oil is also present in some soaps and shampoos and it is a good idea to purchase these so you can wash your feet with it four to five times a day. This oil is a topical treatment and once you have washed and dried your feet, you can apply the oil directly to your nails and affected skin.
Apple cider vinegar is also one of the common remedies for fighting fungus. To treat your foot fungus, you can mix equal parts of warm water and apple cider vinegar in a bucket. Soak your feet in the mixture for about 15-20 minutes twice a day. This treatment works well due to the acidic properties of vinegar which restores the pH levels in the nails.
Onion has strong antiseptic properties and the juice of the onion can be used to find relief. To treat foot fungus with onion juice, peel and cut an onion in half and rub it against a teaspoon until you get some juice. Take a ball of cotton wool and apply this juice to the infected nails and skin.
Some remedies for foot fungus may work well for some people and not for others. If the problem persists after using the simple home remedies, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
